Our most recent program and capital improvements and program expansion tripled the number of seniors that could be accommodated at the Auburn Street Center in Manchester. Its state-of-the-art Alzheimer's Day Health Program and other programs and services are available to seniors and adults with chronic health challenges. Easter Seals is currently the area's leading provider of day services to individuals with Alzheimer's disease.

The expanded program and treatment space boasts appropriate bathroom facilities and showers that insure privacy and safety, kitchens that aid in regaining independent-living skills, increased program and therapy space, and a secure entrance for Alzheimer's clients.

The fastest growing age group is "90 years old and over - the most critical thing that we have to address is the aging of Americans," observes Gammon. To that end, the organization has developed a strategic initiatives to expand its senior services. For the past 14 years, Easter Seals has offered an array of adult day care services, including a medical day rehabilitation program for those requiring nursing monitoring, an ambulatory program for seniors with light medical and mental health needs, and an Alzheimer's Day Program for elders with dementia and memory loss. The Alzheimer's group is a very difficult population, Gammon says, because they require "intensive one-to-one attention." Today, many families are caring for frail, older relatives at home and the day care programs allow adults and seniors to socialize in a secure environment, while offering a respite to their caregivers.
